The first weekend of the Kern County Fair and many families are buying tickets and heading in.
Others like Mario Velasquez not having the same luck.
“I thought it was going to save me 10 dollars a ticket. You know so I thought I could do that, but it didn't work out that way,” said Velasquez.
Velasquez says a friend had told him about a post talking about discounted tickets and wristbands on social media, saying all you had to do was contact the person and pay when you pick them up.
“The person that told me about them, I asked him is it legit. They said yeah that other people had got them before, so I thought it was safe to do it,” said Velasquez.
After meeting a real person -- at a real house and receiving the tickets that appeared to be real, Velasquez says the same friend told him the tickets were a fraud.
“To me, it's like stealing from my kids you know what I'm saying. I'm on a budget, I'm a single dad and you know it's for them. You know I'm not getting on rides, it's for the kids and you know he took advantage of my kids. That's the way I look at it,” said Velasquez.
Unfortunately Velasquez was not the only one this happened to but says he did contact the police who have started an investigation, he just hopes other people can avoid making this same mistake.
“Be careful what you buy online, going to people's places to buy things, just be careful. Bakersfield Connect there are scams out there and they'll take advantage of anybody,” said Velasquez.
And if you are still looking to get tickets, fair officials say to avoid scams just like this make sure you make the purchase online yourself or go to any of the gates at the fairgrounds.
