As the world’s top athletes on snow and ice head to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics, keep an eye on these 10 American stars.
Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto, Figure Skating
After making history at the 2006 Torino Games by earning the United States’ first Olympic medal in ice dancing since a pair earned bronze in 1976, Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto are poised to make another run for the podium. The pair earned silver at the 2009 World Championships to position themselves as one of the teams to beat in Vancouver. These Olympics will also serve as a bit of a homecoming for the Canadian-born Belbin, who was granted U.S. citizenship just before the Torino Games.Gretchen Bleiler, Snowboarding
Gretchen Bleiler, who earned silver behind Hannah Teter in the women’s halfpipe at the 2006 Olympics, draws attention from fans for her stellar moves in the pipe, as well as her looks. Bleiler, who has dabbled in modeling, has also shown in interest in fashion, as she helped design The Bleiler Collection with Oakley.Shani Davis, Speed Skating
Speed skating star Shani Davis drew cheers and jeers at the 2006 Torino Games. He heated up the ice by winning gold in the 1,000m and silver in the 1,500m, but then made headlines for his spat with U.S. teammate Chad Hedrick. Four years later, Davis enters the Olympics as one of the world’s top skaters. He won gold in the 1,500m and bronze in the 1,000m at the 2009 world championships. If he wins gold in the 1,000m in Vancouver, Davis would be the first man in Olympic history to defend his title at that distance.Lindsey Jacobellis, Snowboarding
As a two-time world champion and a two-time World Cup champion, Lindsey Jacobellis has dominated the snowboard cross. However, there is one title she doesn’t yet have – Olympic champion. Jacobellis seemed to be on her way to gold at the 2006 Torino Games, but she fell when she attempted a trick late in her run and ended up finishing second. Now the Vermont native is back for her second Olympics, looking to grab the gold that escaped her in 2006.Evan Lysacek, Figure Skating
Evan Lysacek enters the 2010 Vancouver Olympics as the reigning world champion in men’s figure skating. He made his Olympic debut at the 2006 Torino Games, where he was fourth overall. Lysacek is expected to skate to “Firebird” by Igor Stravinsky in the short program and “Scheherazade” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in the free skate in Vancouver.Bode Miller, Alpine Skiing
Bode Miller, who captured two silver medals at the 2002 Salt Lake Games, finished below expectations at the 2006 Torino Games, where his best finish was fifth. Miller, a two-time overall World Cup champion and four-time world champion, still managed to make headlines in Italy, where his socializing and partying was questioned. The New Hampshire native eventually left the U.S. Ski Team in 2007 and formed Team America. However, in 2009, Miller opted to rejoin his U.S. teammates and attempt to compete in Vancouver.Apolo Anton Ohno, Short Track Speed Skating
Entering his third Olympics, short-track star Apolo Anton Ohno is looking to add to his collection of five Olympic medals (two gold, one silver, two bronze) in Vancouver, which is near his hometown of Seattle. The former “Dancing with the Stars” champion needs two medals to surpass Bonnie Blair as the most decorated U.S. winter Olympian.Hannah Teter, Snowboarding
Hannah Teter is back and looking for another gold in the women’s halfpipe to go along with her first-place jewel from the 2006 Olympics. Teter, who is part of a distinguished snowboarding family, has made an impact for doing more than snowboarding in between Olympics – she has also been busy running a charity, Hannah’s Gold. She donates all of her snowboarding prize money to the charity, which helps support a village in Kenya.Lindsey Vonn, Alpine Skiing
American Alpine star Lindsey Vonn enters the 2010 Vancouver Olympics as a medal contender in all five Olympic events she is expected to compete in. Her top events are the downhill and the super-G, two events that she is the reigning world champion in. She also claimed both the 2008 and 2009 overall World Cup crowns. Vonn, who competed at both the 2002 and 2006 Olympics, is trying to overcome a disappointing outing at the Torino Games. The Minnesota native crashed during a downhill training session, and while she recovered enough to compete at the Games, her best finish in five events was seventh.Shaun White, Snowboarding
Shaun White, the reigning gold medalist, is ready to tear up the halfpipe in his second Olympics. The red-headed snowboarder, who is popularly referred to as the “flying tomato,” has dominated snowboarding as arguably the sport’s most popular rider. The ESPY award winner and star of both the Winter and Summer X Games (as White also stars in skateboarding), took gold in the superpipe at last year’s Winter X Games and was named the Burton European Open Overall Champ.Distributed by Internet Broadcasting.
