An auto dealership in Bakersfield is offering a way for consumers to trade in their old clunkers for a brand new car.

Jim Burke Ford announced Friday that they will participate in the US government's Cash Allowance Rebate System, better known as the Cash For Clunkers program starting on July 24.

Under the provisions of the bill, consumers may trade-in their older vehicles and receive incentives worth up to $4,500 toward the purchase or qualified lease of a new, more fuel-efficient car or truck.

To be eligible for the program, consumers must trade-in a vehicle that meets the following criteria:
  • Must have been manufactured less than 25 years before the date you trade it in.
  • Must have a "new" combined city/highway fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon or less.
  • Must be in drivable condition.
  • Must have been continuously insured and registered to the same owner for the full year preceding the trade-in.
  • This $1 billion program provides incentives for vehicles leased or purchased before Nov. 1, 2009, while incentives supplies last.

Officials said a great reason to take advantage of the program is because the money is tax-free.
