BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Two neighboring downtown Bakersfield stores are trying to keep your favorite hits alive on vinyl. The world of MP3s has hit the pause button on antique turntables in recent years. ABC 23 got an inside look Monday into a pair of downtown business owners that are re-packing new and used music back on to vinyl and the downtown crowd is buying in.The way we listen to music sure has changed over the years. In the early years you needed a turntable, a needle, and of course a bulbous record.
Now music lovers are ditching the needle for a simple click of the thumb on a popular MP3 player such as an iPod.The MP3 file has certainly flipped the music industry, but it hasn’t changed two downtown records spots who are trying to keep vinyl viable.Pat Evans opened world record in 1982. Evans has had world records at three different Bakersfield locations but finally settled downtown this past April and found his niche audience. Evans said new costumers are always in his store wondering how they can restore their vinyl collection.World Records is nestled on G St. right next to another record hot spot Going Underground.Going underground has specialized in new and used vinyl at their current location for the past four years and has been in business going on eight years. They aren’t buying into the so called vinyl comeback. They claim that record buyers will continue to buy records and new age music lovers will continue to follow their own trend.
