BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Triple digit heat and multiple practices a day have caused one high school football program to change the way it tackles heat illness prevention. Two-a-day practices at Bakersfield High School combine pads, hitting and running under the blistering sun. ABC 23 got an inside look Wednesday with the steps being taken to keep kids safe. When you think Bakersfield High, words like legacy or tradition may come to mind. However the high school is very much going the new age untraditional route with how they handle hydration of their football players. The drillers use a fixed rotation of planned team meals and hydration breaks throughout the summer schedule of practices. In addition, the team houses the only on-site nutritionist/hydration specialist in the greater Bakersfield area.
The way the program handles the first three day's of "two-a-day" practice actually looks more like a fraternity outing. Practicing and eating together is just a fraction of the brotherhood. The players don’t leave the Bakersfield High campus and the entire team sleeps on blow-up mattresses in one of the school gymnasiums.
