Cop Plows Cruiser Into Jewelry Store, Hits Woman

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A Bakersfield police officer and a woman are in the hospital after the officer crashed his cruiser into the Jalisco Jewelers at 19th Street and Chester Avenue.The crash happened around 10:30 a.m., Wednesday.Officer Joseph (Mitch) Galland, was responding to reports of a suspect who had just robbed a nearby home, the BPD told ABC23.
Officials told ABC23 that Galland was northbound on Chester Avenue approaching 19th Street, when a 2005 Lexus driven by Manibhai Patel, 66, turned into the path of Galland.Patel and nearby witnesses told police that (Patel) was heading southbound on Chester Avenue on a green light when he stopped mid-turn, when he saw Galland coming with his lights and siren on.Galland swerved to miss the Lexus and plowed into a jewelry store.Veronica Gonzalez, 30, an employee of Jalisco Jewelers, was hit by the debris caused by the crash and was taken to a nearby hospital where she is listed in moderate condition.Galland was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.Galland is listed with minor to moderate injuries.
