A man who suffers from mental conditions was arrested Tuesday morning after police say he was acting strangely and wouldn't send his kids to school.

Around 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday, officers of the Bakersfield Police Department responded to a call of Reynaldo Canales, 33, acting strangely and refusing to send his 5- and 7-year-old children to school in the 1000 block of Seventh Street.

When officers arrived, they said they found Canales acting bizarrely and were advised by family members that he suffers from mental conditions and might be under the influence of drugs.

Canales armed himself with a 6-foot stick and as officers approach him, Canales swung the stick at them, Detective Fred Calvillo said.

An officer utilized a Taser on Canales with no effect, Calvillo said.

Calvillo said Canales pulled the Taser darts out of his body and retreated into his residence where he barricaded himself in a bedroom.

Officers then forced their way into the bedroom and discovered that Canales had armed himself with a metal studded belt and a golf club, Calvillo said.

Police said he then began to striking the arresting officers with the belt and golf club.

Canales was eventually subdued, after fighting with the officers for several minutes, and taken into custody.

Canales received minor injuries from the fight and was transported to Kern Medical Center for treatment.

After being medically cleared from KMC, Canales will be arrested on charges of three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, not a firearm, on the officers, felony resisting officers, exhibiting a deadly weapon other than a firearm and under the influence of a controlled substance.

Five officers were treated for complaint of pain, bumps, minor abrasions and blood exposure from Canales and all officers were released back to full duty.
