BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- The Bakersfield AIDS Project and Ricky’s Retreat have been put into foreclosure and now BAP and residents of the hospice home are scrambling to save their facility. The BAP and Ricky's Retreat has provided hospice housing, social services and group meals for people with HIV for the past six years.Audrey Chavez, BAP director, said, "This house serves as a resource for our area and serves as a safe haven for people who are HIV-positive, to gather, have a home and receive support in a peaceful environment."
Chavez said that Ricky's Retreat has helped hundreds of people rebuild their lives and serves as their makeshift family. Now, the home for those in need will be homeless itself. Last month, BAP was served with a notice to vacate by Feb. 2, because the owner of the home whom they rented from defaulted on payments.Chavez said that the previous owner, Greg Morrow, is nowhere to be found.Christopher Pulsifer, a resident of Ricky’s Retreat, said, “I was almost in tears. The last thing I need is to be looking for a home and this is such a beautiful place."Chavez told ABC23 that there is currently no backup plan if the retreat has to move, Chavez is hoping that she will not need one.
