BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- California is stepping up its campaign against obesity with some new laws that may affect the way you eat.

The new law is modeled after a New York City ordinance that requires the posting of calorie counts and nutritional information on restaurant menu items.

People ABC 23 spoke to say it's a step in the right direction when it comes to health.

As of July 1st, you may have noticed something new on restaurant walls, menus, and brochures. Nutritional information listing the amount of calories, saturated fat, salt and carborhydrates in menu items.

Martha Thenes said, "I think its a good idea." Justin Perroti said, "I think it's a good idea because you know exactly what it is you're eating."

And although the menues might entice you, the calorie numbers may make you think twice.

"I think it's gonna make me make a healthier choice cause I'm aware of what's in the food. The calories and such," said Thenes.

Ken Christy said, "I ordered a cheeseburger. It's ok I'll get around (the calories)."

Maybe it won't affect everyone's choices. Restaurants ABC 23 spoke to say they haven't seen a significant change in their sales or customers' selections.

McDonald's Assistant Manager Veronica Arthera said, "You know we haven't noticed any changes at all. It's just regular customers coming in. Salads we don't sell much. Sales haven't changed."

Although there may not have been much change in this past week since the law was enacted, those ABC 23 spoke to hope consumers will make a change for a healthier America.

"I hope so cause we all need it," said Christy.

Also starting in 2011, drive-through customers will have to be offered nutritional brochures with their orders. The law is focused on large restaurant chains, so chances are you won't find them in small family-owned restaurants.
