A man has been arrested on charges of attempted kidnapping after, Bakersfield Police said a 15-year-old girl told them he ran up behind her and tried to pick her up and carry her away.

Bakersfield police say it happened around 7:45 a.m. Thursday as the teen was walking in the area of Sandra Street and Merrimac Avenue.

The teen said that Manuel Polanco, 24, grabbed her from behind and tried to carry her away. Police said he saw an elderly couple nearby so he let her go and ran.

The following morning, the teen's father saw Polanco, who matched the girl's description, and he called police.

Polanco has been booked into the Kern County jail.
