Study: Wednesday Is Deadliest Day For Suicides

Research Shows That Almost 25 Percent Of Suicides Happen On Wednesday

A recent study led by UC Riverside stated that Wednesday is the deadliest day for suicides.

We've all heard of manic Mondays, but what about suicide Wednesdays?

ABC23 asked people what was the toughest day of the week for them. Most answered Monday because the weekend is over and they have the whole week ahead of them. But a recent report stated that Wednesday can actually be the hardest and deadliest.

According to the national study, people are far more likely to kill themselves in the middle of the week than in the beginning or the end. Almost 25 percent of suicides occur on Wednesdays compared to 14 percent on Mondays or Saturdays.

Research suggested job stress as a major factor. By Wednesday, job pressures may peak, traffic has gotten to be too much, or co-workers may have become really annoying.

The study also found if you make it through Wednesday, your risk for suicide drops by half on Thursdays, when 11 percent of suicides occur.

So what can you do to help someone make it over hump day? Bill Walker of the Kern County Mental Health Department suggests scheduling something on Wednesday to look forward to and push them through the rest of the week.

Walker said, "If they like church, I'd schedule a Wednesday night service, something to give meaning to the middle of the week for them."

The UCR researchers also found that the risk of suicide is greater for individuals who live in states with higher suicide rates, perhaps because a high suicide rate increases awareness of suicide and creates attitudes favorable to suicidal behavior; and that the risk of suicide decreases in states with proportionally larger numbers of physicians.

Although, suicide experts said to not read too much into the Wednesday theory because suicides can happen any day and involve many more factors.
