CHP Officer Runs Into Pedestrian With Cruiser

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- The California Highway Patrol said that a pedestrian was hit by a CHP officer Monday morning.Around 8:50 a.m., CHP Officer Leonard Dehart was traveling southbound on M Street and was stopped for a red traffic signal, preparing to make a left-hand turn onto eastbound SR-178.As the signal light phased to green, Dehart said he slowly moved forward to allow for a vehicle traveling northbound on M Street to pass.
The sun was shining through the driver's side window and windshield from a southeast direction.As the northbound vehicle passed his location, Dehart said he accelerated to make his left turn. While making the turn, Dehart said the sunlight became more intense.Prior to completing his turn, Dehart saw a female pedestrian walking in a northerly direction within the crosswalk directly ahead of him.Dehart said he applied his brakes but was unable to stop in time and struck Franzisca Nzau.Nzau was transported to Kern Medical Center with a broken pelvis and collarbone.
