BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Staff members at a local church were victimized once when the church was broken into last week, now at least two of those staffers have been victimized a second time.Since the break-in at the Lutheran Church of Prayer on Morning Drive last week one staff member's bank account has had suspicious activity and another had her home broken into during Sunday church services. When you walk inside the Lutheran Church of Prayer you're welcomed into the church's office, but in the early morning hours of Oct. 12 the church had some not so welcomed visitors.
"Our teacher was rather scared," said Rev. Robert Lutjens. "She came in at 6 and apparently startled the burglars in the middle of the act. She never saw them, she just heard them peel off."And the unknown robber or robbers took off with four of the church's computers and many of their backup disks that contained among other things."Our personnel records including our social security numbers and our bank accounts because we use direct deposit and all of those were exposed," Lutjens said. The thieves jimmied open the doors to the main church office, the pastor's office and the school director's office taking the electronics and gaining access to personnel and personal paperwork. Information that has already led to more criminal acts."One of our staff, the one that works with our two-year-olds has had some unusual activity on her bank account that was not authorized," Lutjens said. "We also had our financial secretary's home that was burglarized this last Sunday while we were in church."Parishioners learned the news of the church break-in that same day as their addresses and phone numbers were also on the stolen computers. And while staff continues to clean-up and discover what's missing, they're also thankful."Really we're going to use this as a good thing, its just stuff, nobody was hurt and we praise God for that," Lutjens said. "We are here to say there is forgiveness of sins, we even prayed for the thieves this last Sunday hoping and wishing that they would not feel the need to do this or continue to do this."No fingerprints were found as it's believed the thieves wore gloves as staff found several pairs in the driveway and it's not clear how they got into the building to break-in to the offices.Anyone with information is urged to contact the Bakersfield Police Department.
