UPDATED: 2:47 pm PDT October 26, 2009

On Sunday around 12:10 a.m., Bakersfield Police responded to a report of a stabbing in the 1400 block of Quincy Street.

Upon arrival, officers located Adam Duran 24 lying in the roadway suffering from a stab wound. He was transported to Kern Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries, officers said.

Investigation revealed Duran was interrupted while attempting to steal a car by a 52-year-old man witness in the neighborhood.

The witness told police that he recognized Duran and tried to convince him to refrain from sealing the car.

According to the witness, they argued, Duran challenged him, and they began to fight.

The witness said he was overpowered by Duran who was beating him about the head and face.

The witness said he feared for his life and therefore, removed a knife from his pocket and stabbed Duran in the abdomen which ended the assault.

The witness’s injuries were consistent with his description of the assault. The witness was not arrested for the homicide nor will he be identified at this point for his own safety.

Once the investigation is concluded it will be submitted to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office for review.
