BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- It started an Eagle Scout project but ended up meaning a lot more to a local teen and the Boys and Girls Club community.Schoolmates cheered on 15-year-old Cory Camp Tuesday morning as he received a very special honor during Bakersfield Christian High School's awards forum."We just want to thank you for all you've done for the Boys and Girls club," said Boys and Girl's Club representative Natalie Martinez.
"I was surprised when I got the award today. That's not why I did the project," said Camp.A few months ago, Camp approached the Boys and Girls Club in East Bakersfield looking to help out the kids as part of his Boy Scout Eagle Project."(I) asked if there was anything for me to do and they said not really but there's this playground... we walked in and there were weeds all over, trash, basketball backboards weren't there," said Camp.So for one month, Camp, with the help of some fellow Boy Scouts, spent every weekend renovating the play area. He tilled the sand in the playground, created a grassy picnic area, painted new basketball court lines and bought new basketball hoops."I asked for donations, but with the economy, you don't get that many donations so my mom and dad were willing to give me the money to buy things I needed," said Camp.A couple thousand dollars and a few donations later they created an updated playground for the kids."Before they weren't able to play in the sand because it wasn't diced up as much so it was hard for them. They'd fall and get bumps and bruises. Now they can actually sink into the sand," said Martinez.Camp says all he wanted was to give underprivileged kids a place to look forward to."Well, I just wanted to make it so they want to go even more and be like, oh, I'm going to the Boys and Girls Club today," said Camp."For the community, I think he's an inspiration and to see someone his age come up with this idea to give back to the Boys and Girls club is phenomenal," said Martinez. The Camps would like to thank City Neon, Oasis Turf and Clint Co for their donations and help.
