BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- On any given day of the week, you'll find Guillermina Herrera hosting her yard sale.Maribel Ortega said, "Every day I see her out here as I go to pick up my son from school."Herrera said, "I used to hold yard sales to make extra spending money but now it's what I rely on to buy groceries, medications and even bills."
Herrera said she does it because she's too old to work, and even if she could, there aren't enough jobs out there. She says, "I have to do something to make money. Life is sad. After working my whole life I still end up with nothing. I can't work and the state keeps taking away health benefits. So once again I have to find some way to make money."Herrera isn't the only one finding work from her closet."I've seen a lot more people having yard sales when in years past they wouldn't," said Ortega.A few blocks away, the couple behind another yard sale who don't want to be identified said they're out here at least once a week, far more often than in years past."This is because things are getting harder in life. We don't have enough money to pay bills so we have to sell things to make ends meet," said the couple. While most customers are yard sale scavengers, Herrera targets the parents who take their kids to the nearby school, waiting the whole day in hopes they'll spend whatever change they have."Even if its 50 cents or a couple dollars. Its still something," said Herrera."Sometimes we're out here all day and don't make nothing. Sometimes we make a few dollars sometimes we make nothing. We do what we have to do to pay the bills," said the couple.
