Man Tried To Remove Officers Firearm During Fight

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Police monitoring traffic through a school zone got more than they bargained for after a car lead them on a chase, while one of the men threw a loaded gun out the window, police said.Police say the chase happened around 8 a.m. Monday near Garces High School, when they said they saw a green Hyundai sedan speeding.As police tried to pull over the Hyundai near Manor Street, police said the men threw out loaded firearm that was later found by police, Detective Mary DeGeare said.
Police said shortly after that, the men tried to make an evasive turn into a neighborhood, and hit a gray Dodge pickup truck near Manor Street and Ferguson Avenue.Police said both men took off on foot after the crash, but were later found in two separate back yards in the 1000 block of Glade Street.A struggle ensued and one of the men tried to remove the firearm from one of the arresting officers, DeGeare said.Both men were eventually taken into custody.The driver, Alton Riley, 37, of Bakersfield was arrested on charges of felony evading, resisting arrest, felon in possession of a loaded firearm, parole violation and hit-and-run.The passenger, Brian Bland, 24, of Bakersfield was arrested on chargse of felony resisting arrest as he attempted to remove the officer’s gun from his holster, felon in possession of a loaded firearm, and parole violation.Both men were transported to a local hospital to be treated for injuries and then both will be booked into the Kern County Jail.The driver of the grey Dodge pickup was not injured in the collision.
