BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A local teenage girl had to be rushed to the hospital after being struck by a pickup while riding her horse. The accident happened just before 6 p.m. Monday. The California Highway Patrol said the 15-year-old girl was crossing the road on Vineland Road just south of Highway 58 when she was struck by a pickup truck.
Officials said the teen was accompanied by another 15-year-old riding another horse, they were not hit.ABC23 spoke with the owner of the horse, Steve Oakleaf who said that the girl was actually 13 years old and that she was on the shoulder of the highway and was actually dismounting her horse not crossing the street. The horse didn't belong to the 13-year-old girl, Oakleaf said. The girl was allowed to ride the horse because her horse was acting up, Oakleaf told ABC23.Oakleaf said he was thankful that his horse was killed and not the girl's horse, because she would've been completely devastated.Oakleaf told ABC23 that the pickup was traveling at least 70 miles per hour and when it made contact with the horse, it launched the horse around 150 feet. The CHP is investigating. The girl's horse died on the scene, CHP said. The girl suffered minor injuries, CHP said.
