H1N1 Clinics Show Low Turnout For Ethnic Groups

Blacks, Whites And Asians Refusing Vaccine

As the numbers of people hospitalized or dying from the H1N1 virus continue to rise, more and more people are choosing to opt out of getting the H1N1 vaccine. Health officials say entire demographics are showing low turnouts in the efforts against the swine flu.

The county health department says preliminary figures for the H1N1 vaccine clinics are showing a lower turnout among Asians, African-Americans and Caucasians. Hispanics are proving to be the vast majority asking for the vaccine. ABC 23 spoke to several people who have refused to get the shot. Some reasons were that the lines are too long, they don't feel its a priority, or they just don't have time. While others say they don't trust the vaccine.

Nicci Benwar said, "It's fairly new so we don't know for sure if it's actually working or not and how it is going to affect our bodies." Ryan Laughlin said, "I think it's dangerous. I don't know, I've heard a lot of bad things about it. I think I'd rather let my immune system do the work."

So far, at least 14 people have died and 160 have been hospitalized for the swine flu.

The health department says chances of getting sick from the swine flu is far greater than getting sick from the vaccine. So everyone healthy or not, should get it.
