Man Mixes Motorcycle, Bicycle To Create Cheap Transportation

Many of us have heard of souped up cars, but a souped up bicycle? Motorized bikes are a cross between traditional bicycles and motorcycles but offer the best of both those worlds.

If you've driven around town, you may have seen Greg Garcia and his motorized bike.

"Sometimes, I'm riding down the road and cops look at me, trying to see what I'm riding. It's kind of funny, some of the newer cops look you up and down and don't know whether to give you a ticket," said Garcia.

That's because it’s a bicycle with a motor. But it's not a motorcycle. So what is it?

"It's a great great thing," said Garcia.

That's because it's as fast as a motor vehicle but you don't need a license, registration or insurance for it. This is why Garcia sold his truck and with a couple hundred dollars, built his motorized bicycle.

"It's super economical and a lot cheaper than driving a car. I don't know that many cars that get 150 miles to the gallon," said Garcia.

And with speeds reaching 50 mph, "I can go just about anywhere in town and it's faster than the bus," said Garcia.

Not only is it cost friendly, but eco-friendly.

"They leave less an imprint on the earth because they use so little gas and use less energy," said Garcia.

It has a two-stroke motor that allows you to ride around without pedaling.

Garcia said he’s has had so many people ask him to build them a bike, he's decided to open up business for it. Steven Alvarez said he’s hoping to be Garcia’s first customer.

"I think they're great myself. They're really cheap, good on gas and it's cool to have a bike you don't need to pedal. I can get across town and everything," said Alvarez.

The motorized bikes go for about $500 on average and require little to no maintenance. Just an occasional oil or filter change. Now, if you're wondering why a person doesn't need a license, insurance or registration for the bike, that's because the DMV does not recognize it as a motor vehicle because it's a homemade contraption.
