UPDATED: 2:37 pm PST February 26, 2010

A man was rushed to the hospital after he was found stabbed five times to his chest and upper body.

Around 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, deputies with the Kern County Sheriff's Department responded to the Ranch Market, at 2309 Niles St., on a report of a victim of a stabbing.

When deputies arrived, they said they found a man who was suffering from five stab wounds to his chest and upper body.

The deputies also found that an off-duty deputy sheriff had the two men, Joseph Zuniga, 21, and Jose Abarca Jr., 32, detained in the parking lot.

The off-duty deputy said he was in the market when he observed the man and Zuniga and Abarca fighting in the parking lot.

He said during the fight, he saw one of the men grab a knife and stab the victim multiple times.

The off-duty deputy then went to the parking lot and identified himself, then detained Zuniga and Abarca until patrol deputies arrived.

Both Zuniga and Abarca were arrested on charges of attempted murder and were booked into the Central Receiving Facility.

The man was transported to Kern Medical Center and is listed in critical but stable condition.
