BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A gun scare at Bakersfield College forced school officials to close the cafeteria Tuesday morning.Around 9:30 a.m., college officials said students started making 911 calls when a fellow student began threatening others with a pellet gun, Amber Chiang, spokeswoman for the college, said."When he made the threat, he lifted his jacket so that a portion of the weapon was displayed. Three witnesses saw the weapon," said Chiang.
College officials said that 19-year-old Jermaine Turner told several students that he would kill everyone in the cafeteria.Campus police and the Bakersfield Police Department quickly arrived, and they said that while interviewing witnesses, Turner was spotted trying to sneak away."One of the witnesses was talking to police. As she did, she saw the suspect, pointed at him and said that's him. He was immediately taken to the ground and arrested," said Chiang.Police said that witnesses told them that an argument had occurred in the cafeteria and Turner had made threats to shoot a female while he displayed a handgun in his waistband by lifting his shirt to expose it.Turner was arrested on charges of participation in a street gang, brandishing a replica weapon and threatening with the intent to terrorize.A realistic looking air soft pistol was later found in a locker, Sevelyn Astillo with the BPD said. Turner reportedly had someone stash it in the locker once police arrived.
