Local Establishments Breathe Sigh Of Relief After Being Put On Egg Recall List

Not All Establishments Found To Have Salmonella Tainted Eggs

With half a billion eggs recalled nationwide and thousands of people sick, some consumers aren't taking any chances. "I've just been staying away from it since I heard the news. You're conscious of it. You stay away from eggs and stuff until you hear otherwise," said Paul Martinez.

Consumers aren't the only ones staying away from eggs; so are many businesses. "I changed my menu not to serve any eggs," said Jason's Retreat cook Kevin Bowers.

Jason's Retreat did a menu change as soon as it discovered it was one of 33 places in Kern County that was listed as possibly having salmonella-tainted eggs. Bowers said he was first notified by their food distributor. "They immediately came to me and let me know there was a problem with eggs, and they pulled all my eggs. I had maybe a case of eggs," said Bowers.

Great Castle restaurant was also on the list. But it wasn't the food distributor that notified the restaurant's owner. "The Health Department sent the letter and called to tell us we need to watch out. Also the health department came to check the eggs. They went to the kitchen and into the freezer to check each box," said restuarant owner Yun Li Wang. Fortunately for the restuarant and its customers, no tainted eggs were found. "We feel very good. We know it's a bad thing to have those eggs. You don't want to sell bad eggs to customers," said Wang. "You got to be safe. You don't want to eat stuff that's going to hurt your and your family," said Martinez.

So far there are no reports of salmonella poisoning in Kern County. The Public Health Department would like to remind people to thoroughly cook their eggs meaning at 145-degree temperature to kill any bacteria.
