BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Police say they have made a break in the double killing of an East Bakersfield couple over the weekend. Bakersfield police said Erran West was arrested Tuesday night in connections with the deaths of Levon Vines and Ernestine Trejo.

Police say Vines was shot to death in a field on Collins Way on Saturday night. The following morning, Trejo who is Vines' girlfriend, was found shot to death along Edison Highway, police said.

It is unknown how the two ended up slain at different locations, police said. Investigators are not saying what the shootings were over or why West has been named the suspect.

Even though detectives are not saying much about the investigation, friends of the couple are. "Well, I'm really glad someone got arrested. It was a pretty vicious crime," said one friend who asked to not be identified.

"I am happy. Extremely happy. We want know who did this. We want to know why," said another close family friend who asked to not be identified.

Close friends of Vines and Trejo are happy to hear West has been arrested in the killings. But they still don't know why the two were killed to begin with.

"She didn't deserve it. Neither of them did," said the friend.

"Levon was a good person. He was a family man that got caught up with drugs," said another friend.

One friend said Vines got out of drugs and even started his own hauling business. "He was really proud about that, and that's what I admired about him, he stayed focused for a long time," said the friend.

That was, until this past year. His friend said that's when Vines and Trejo became a romantic couple and got back into drugs. "I think that might have led to his downfall," said the friend.

Vines' friend says Vines' tires had been recently slashed. "He told me someone cut his tires but he didn't elaborate on why or who," said the friend. "They owed people money, but I don't think it was serious enough to take their lives over," said another friend.

Friends of the couple say if West is found to be the killer, "I hope justice is served over this," said one friend. "I hope they get the death penalty," said another friend.
