BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A volunteer at the Community Action Partnership Food Bank assigned to be the peacekeeper at the door has been dismissed for disrupting the peace. The volunteer, who asked to be identified only as "Anthony," said he was trying to stop a woman from taking too much bread when when another client confronted him for his behavior toward the woman. "The guy got all up in my face," said Anthony. One witness, who did not want to be identified said, "It looked like the guy wanted to go toe to toe with Anthony. He was up in his face. Then I watched him pull a knife out of his pocket and threaten him with it."
The Food Bank sent Anthony home to cool off, but when he returned today to volunteer, he said they kicked him out. "I'm upset because I get up every morning to volunteer," said Anthony."The food bank runs on volunteer of the community. If ever there's a situation with a volunteer, we work with them. The only time we'd dismiss someone is extreme situations"Food Bank manager Ian Anderson said they dismissed Anthony because he has aggressively confronted clients in the past and this latest incident was the final straw."Repeatedly we've asked him not to confront any of our clients. If there's an issue, food bank staff should go out and handle the situation not volunteers," said Anderson."I'm doing my job volunteer or paid I'm going to do what you tell me to do. You tell us not to let people take more than four loaves of bread so we stop them," said Anthony."Our clients are extremely stressed and on edge because of everything going on with them and the last thing they need is someone confronting them," said Anderson."Don't tell us to do one thing and when we do it you stab us in the back," said Anthony."There are women, children, elderly that come through here so it is extremely important for the food bank that we protect our clients and our staff," said Anderson.
