23Editorial: Joey Porter's Challenge Should Inspire Politicians
Airdate: Feb. 21
Our local politicians couldn't ask for a better photo op. There was Bakersfield's very own Joey Porter, the Super Bowl star, back in town for a hero's welcome. Bakersfield's biggest cheerleader, Mayor Harvey Hall showed up -- so did councilmembers Jacque Sullivan and Irma Carson. Assemblyman Dean Florez sent a proclamation, as did his bitter rival Nicole Parra. Sheriff Mack Wimbish even twirled a towel. The crowds cheered, and the politicians absolutely dripped with delight delivering such inspiring comments as this from councilwoman Sue Benham: "Thank you Mr. Porter and your family for honoring us. Thank you Councilmember Carson. Great idea. Let's have some fun." But it was Joey Porter who really did inspire when he suddenly donned a stop the violence hat and told the assembled crowd that if they could come together to honor him, Bakersfield could come together to stop the gang violence that's gripped our city. God bless you Joey Porter. You still know what's really important -- giving back to your hometown. Joey Porter gets it. He used his celebrity to try to make a difference on the streets where he grew up. 23ABC says it's awfully easy for our politicians to stand next to a hero and have some fun. Now, do the hard part and live up to his challenge. That's our take, now it's your turn.
