Dancing Teacher Kicks Up Controversy

Teacher On Paid Leave Pending Investigation

A Phoenix-area teacher whose cheer routine in front of her class was posted on YouTube has been put on paid administrative leave.

Officials are investigating whether the cheer routine was appropriate for the classroom, KPHO-TV in Phoenix reported.

Higley Unified School District officials would not confirm the name of the teacher.

A student at Williams Field High School captured the video using a cell phone. In the video, students can be heard laughing and whistling as the teacher performs the routine.

Freshman Paige Mayer, a student, said the dance moves were no big deal.

"I think everyone's blowing this way out of proportion," she said.

A YouTube commenter posted a message that said the teacher should be fired.

Debbie Gotham, a parent, said the teacher on camera and the student behind it are both guilty of doing wrong things. Cell phones aren't allowed in class.

"I think both sides might have erred in judgment," Gotham said.

On the YouTube page, the title implies that the instructor teaches humanities, the television station reported.

The principal, assistant principal and school district officials did not want to comment other than to confirm that the teacher is on leave during the investigation.
