Professor Wrestling: Recapping 'Against All Odds'

Kurt Angle Gets His First Shot At NWA Gold

POSTED: 4:40 pm PST February 8, 2007

Listen up!

Class is in session.

It's been a few months since Kurt Angle made the incredible jump from WWE to TNA, and for the first time the former Olympian got a chance Sunday at winning the NWA title at the "Against All Odds" pay-per-view. Did Angle prevail? The answer is below, but first let's see how the rest of the card shaped up:

"Basebrawl" Match: Team Eckstein vs Team Pierzynski
What Should Happen: In one corner, St. Louis Cardinals hero David Eckstein and babyface Lance Hoyt. In the other corner, Chicago White Sox weirdo A.J. Pierzynski and heel Dale Torborg. The match pits Torborg versus Hoyt, with the ballplayers acting as managers. If it were up to me, Pierzynski would pull a Jimmie Piersall and snap, clubbing everyone -- even Torborg -- with a bat. Then he would be thrown in a straightjacket and never be seen again. One other thing: look for a special appearance by New York Yankee Johnny Damon. He's somehow involved in this as well.

What Will Happen: I'm guessing this will be a no contest with plenty of bats flying. A.J. and Eck won't be too physical. Spring training is around the corner, and they simply make too much money to get hurt 'rasslin.

What Did Happen: No bats, just chairs flying -- as each baseball star each got a swing in. Hoyt eventually won after Eckstein nailed Torborg with a chair.

Challenge Match: James Storm and Miss Tennessee vs. Petey Williams and Gail Kim.
What Should Happen: Two individuals can wrestle in this match: Williams and Tennessee (she was Jacqueline in WWE). They could put on a heck of a show. But we won't see that. In fact, I'm not sure why we're seeing this one in the first place. A wrestling promotion should never charge real money for a mixed tag match.

What Will Happen: I'll take Petey and Kim. Babyfaces usually win these things.

What Did Happen: Jackie pinned Kim for the win, as the heels took it.

Motor City Chain Match: A.J. Styles vs. Rhino
What Should Happen: In this one, these two bitter rivals will be chained to each other during the match. That's not good news for the smaller, more acrobatic Styles. But I'm guessing the writers will find a way for him to win. It's time for these two to move on to other things.

What Will Happen: Styles will prevail.

What Did Happen: Styles prevailed. Please move on.

Little Italy Street Fight: Team 3D vs. Latin American Exchange
What Should Happen: This is your basic no-rules slobberknocker, with the heels LAX not required to put up their NWA tag belts. That in itself means the babyfaces -- Team 3D -- will win.

What Will Happen: Wager the mortgage, and take Team 3D.

What Did Happen: Well, on second thought, perhaps you shouldn't bet the farm. LAX took it, in a crazy farce that featured several unidentified Hispanic men hitting the ring. It was also the first time I've seen a pizza cutter used as a foreign object. Those crazy gimmick matches.

X-Division Title Match: Chris Sabin (c) vs. Jerry Lynn
What Should Happen: It's a teacher vs. student match, with Lynn playing Sabin's scorned mentor. If I were writing the show, I'd have Lynn take Sabin to school for the entire match and then have Sabin cheat to win in the bitter end. That would create the most heat. Both men are great, so this could be an excellent match.

What Will Happen: I'm going with Sabin to retain.

What Did Happen: Sabin hooked the ropes to pin Lynn, keeping his belt.

Prison Yard Match: Abyss vs. Sting
What Should Happen: In previous episodes of TNA "Impact," Sting ratted on Abyss, saying he shot his own father. In response, Abyss set Sting's face on fire. So now there's a Prison Yard match. I'm not sure what the rules are, but I guess the winner has to lock his opponent in a small cage. What should happen? Does it matter? While I like Sting, this mess certainly doesn't fit with TNA's "We Are Wrestling" slogan.

What Will Happen: Sting will be the king of the prison yard.

What Did Happen: Abyss and Mitchell bled. Sting won after he tossed Abyss into the cage.

NWA World Title Match: Christian Cage (c) vs. Kurt Angle
What Should Happen: Cage won the title in the last TNA PPV, so I'm no so sure he's dropping it here. At least, I wouldn't let him drop it. This could be a classic series of matches where the intense babyface/tweener, Angle, chases the slippery heel, Cage. That's a moneymaker in my book. Also, look for interference from Scott Steiner, who is booked here as Cage's "consultant." With Samoa Joe also in the mix, this could be as good as the X-Division title bout.

What Will Happen: I'll take Mr. Cage to keep his title.

What Did Happen: Cage prevailed, pinning Angle after hitting him with a lead pipe. Angle doesn't look weak, and the heel champ keeps his belt. I approve.

That's it, kids, my picks for this particular pay-per-view. For the record, I had four out of seven of the big matches picked perfectly. That, again, is a great batting average. As I like to say again and again: I'm the man.

Speaking of greatness, make sure to download Episode 19 of our podcast, "Old School, New School." It's RIGHT HERE! This week, Dr. Mike Lano, George Schire and your professor are back at it, offering you an audio classroom of topics past and present. This week, we give a thumbs up/thumbs down to MTV's new "Wrestling Society X" series. Also on tap: we name the greatest heels of all time, and catch up with The Ultimate Warrior in our "Where Are They Now" segment. It's "Old School, New School." Don't even think about missing it.

Now scram, because this class is -- dismissed!
