Finding that perfect holiday gift can be overwhelming. Between video games and gadgets, old-fashioned favorites and imagination-based toys, choosing the right gift can take hours of research and stress.

Megan Howard, Editor in chief at Gifts.com offers some suggestions to help you find the right gift, whatever your child's age.

Your child's personality can help tap into the gifts they'd really love. Sure, most kids write a list, but if that list seems to be a compendium of video games and CDs, you may want to find something a little more substantial. Is your child "Miss Imagination," "The Tomboy," or "The Girly Girl?" Is your son "The Smarty Pants," "Mr. Imagination," or "The Jock?" What they would love the most can be easier to find once you determine their personality.

Video Games

Of course video games are popular. The big seller this season is "Guitar Hero 3." For those smaller kids who aren't ready for a major gaming system, Fisher Price has introduced "I Can Play Guitar."

"It's a fun and easy way to learn to play instruments," said Howard.

If you're looking for a gaming system, the Wii is quite popular and it is one of the more "active" gaming systems on the market.

Mario Galaxy is expected to be pretty popular this holiday season, with 3D graphics and character's movements controlled by the Wii controller, it gets kids moving while they advance within the game.

High-Tech Gear

Preschoolers are showing interest in electronics, especially if they have older siblings. The Leapfrog ClickStart is like a child's first computer – but more durable and less expensive.

"Check out video cameras that are made specifically for grade school kids," said Howard. Kids can capture their life in video, create short "films" and otherwise take up hours of their time with something that could become a lifelong love.

"Kids want Radical U.B. Funkeys," she said. "They're characters that plug into your computer via USB port and allow you to visit and decorate a virtual 'crib'."

Teens and tweens big gifts this year are gadgets. From the Nike + iPod Sport Kit, and the new iPod Nanos and Touch, Flippy Mimobot USB keys to iTunes gift certificate, the majority of desires require computer access and electricity.

Teen girls are also asking for those gadgets, but their desires are more diverse. From knitting kits to T-shirts that support a cause, to trendy makeup and funky bedroom décor, girls wants have a more expressive nature.

High School Musical merchandise is also hugely popular. Consider the DVD release of High School Musical 2, as well as dance mats, games, clothing, books and more.

Fun Fitness

Want to kill two birds with one stone? Think fun toys with a fitness twist.

"The Smart Cycle by Fisher Price plugs into the TV and takes kids on a learning adventure as they pedal," said Howard.

Also check out laser tag sets, fun wheels – which get kids places and test their agility, inflatable snow bunkers for outdoor winter fun or a Sno Slider – it's a wearable sled!

For Babies & Toddlers

Babies and toddlers learn a lot from their toys and activities. Check out some brain-stimulating options for them.

"A really fun idea is the 'I Am The Boss' dinosaur ball pit," said Howard. It's a big blue dinosaur that unzips to expose dozens of balls for tons of fun for kids 6 months to 3 years old. It'll keep them occupied and active.

The Fischer Price Song And Story Chair is an interactive chair and table set that teaches animals, colors and more. It also have a mini lamp, storybook and pop-up crayons. It looks just like an easy chair that daddy might use!

Dress-up clothes are also a great option. Whether it's a hot dog or Santa Claus costume for a baby under a year of age or princess, firefighter or cat costumes that stimulate the imagination, costumes are a fun, easy gift.

Back To Basics

Just because they're asking for phones, video game systems and electronics doesn't mean you can't "wow" them with old-fashioned toys that don't have to plug into a wall.

Check out some of the old favorites like Slinky, Lincoln Logs, or a good old fashioned board game.

"Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium" reintroduced many of those old classics that make fantastic holiday gifts. Give a Rubik's Cube, sock monkey socks, a jack-in-the-box, Mr. Potato Head or Sniff 'n Snoop pull toy. Most young kids would be delighted, and you can enjoy a moment of nostalgia.
