"The X-Files" and "Californication" star Duchovny has entered rehab for sex addiction.

Duchovny's lawyer, Stanton Stein, said that the actor entered rehab voluntarily.

Stein released a statement from Duchovny, which said, "I ask for respect and privacy for my wife and children as we deal with this situation as a family."

Duchovny has been married to actress Tea Leoni for 11 years. They have two children.

In addition, Showtime, which airs his latest show, "Californication," issued its own statement: "All of us at Showtime wish David and his family the best during this very private time."

Duchovny, 48, recently starred in the second "X-Files" movie "The X-Files: I Want to Believe" -- where he reprised his role from the hit television series, which ran from 1993-2002.

His other credits include the films "Return to Me," "Zoolander" and "Chaplin," and he's also had roles on such television shows as "Twin Peaks" and "Life with Bonnie," and a guest spot on "Sex and the City."
