Like every year, the Academy Awards has its share of hits, misses and more. Here's a rundown of the highlights from the 81st annual celebration Sunday in Los Angeles. Fashion Forward: Credit first lady Michelle Obama for the many one- shoulder dresses we saw on the red carpet and for the many women dressed in white. Obama wore a white Jason Wu one-shoulder gown at the inaugural ball, and this year some of red carpet's favorite fashions were lighter shades of pale.
Fashion Standouts: For best dressed at the Oscars, the award goes to:
Miley Cyrus in a Zuhair Murad gown Frieda Pinto in John Galliano Amy Adams in Carolina Herrera Diane Lane in Dolce and Gabanna Sarah Jessica Parker dressed in what she described as "barely mint" by Dior Haute Couture Anne Hathaway wearing Armani. The previous two years she wore Marchesa and Valentino Mickey Rourke in a cream Jean-Paul Gaultier tuxedo Brad Pitt in a Tom Ford tuxedo and shoes Kate Winslet in a two-tone Yves Saint Laurent by Stefano Pilati dress Angelina Jolie in black, but wearing a large emerald ring and emerald earrings. The long black gown was a departure as she's been wearing light colors during this year's award season Marisa Tomei in a pearl gray Versace that arrived on Sunday morning Melissa Leo in a copper chiffon gown by Badgley Mischka Fashion Backwards:: Penelope Cruz accepted her Best Supporting Actress Oscar in a 50-year-old vintage Balmain, a dress she had eyed for eight years.Stealing The Spotlight: Newly expectant Nichole Ritchie will share Monday morning headlines with Oscar thanks to Joel Madden, frontman of Good Charlotte. The father to Ritchie's one-year-old daughter posted on his web site Sunday, "What's better than winning an Oscar? I am so happy to tell everyone that Harlow is going to be a big sister! God has truly blessed my family. Hope your (sic) all feeling as good as I am right now."
