Best Picture nominee: "Beasts of the Southern Wild" -- Spoiler alert! Here's a synopsis, courtesy of imdb.com and Wikipedia, in case you don't see the movie. But beware, we give away the ending!
In a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a levee, a 6-year-old girl named Hushpuppy (Quvenzhane Wallis) exists on the brink of orphanhood, fighting often with her alcoholic father, Wink (Dwight Henry).
Hushpuppy and Wink wait out a strong storm, but as they try to rebuild with others, the salt water left behind begins to kill everything. Wink damages part of the levee and the water recedes, but rescue workers sweep in and take everyone to safety.
Wink undergoes surgery at the rescue shelter, but his health doesn't return, and at the first possible chance, the evacuees escape back to their homes.
That's when Hushpuppy goes in search of her mother, but she ultimately returns to comfort her father in his last moments. After a touching funeral, she vows to stay in the impoverished community.
