Best Picture nominee: "Django Unchained" -- Spoiler alert! Here's a synopsis, courtesy of imdb.com and Wikipedia, in case you don't see the movie. But beware, we give away the ending!
Set two years before the Civil War, a former slave named Django (Jamie Foxx) and German bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) become unlikely allies in the battle against tyrannical plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).
Schultz is hunting fugitives when he needs Django's help identifying two wanted brothers. They go into business together for a winter, after which Schultz agrees to help Django rescue his wife, Broomhilda (Kerry Washington).
Schultz and Django pose as men interested in buying a slave for gladiator-like competitions that Candie deals in, visiting the plantation where Broomhilda is being held.
But just as the pair finds Broomhilda and plot a daring escape, Candie's house slave Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson) learns of their plan and alerts Candie.
Schultz ends up shooting Candie, and while Django puts up a fight, he eventually surrenders when Candie's men threaten to kill his wife. He's nearly shipped off to a coal mine, but he escapes and returns to the plantation to exact his revenge.
Django kills Candie's men and sister as they return from Candie's funeral, shooting Stephen in the knees and blowing up the home, riding off victorious with Broomhilda.
