  2. Pat Solatano (Bradley Cooper), a bipolar man from Philadelphia, finds himself living back with his mother (Jacki Weaver) and father (Robert De Niro) after spending eight months in a state institution after he assaulted his wife's lover.

  3. Pat wants to get back together with his wife, even though she has a restraining order. He befriends a depressed young woman named Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), who is mourning the death of her husband by engaging in compulsive sex.

  4. Tiffany offers to help Pat reconnect with his wife, but only if he acts as her partner in a local dance competition. Things go well until Pat Sr. loses his life savings betting on an Eagles game.

  5. The family agrees that if the Eagles win their next game and Pat and Tiffany score at least 5 at the dance competition, he'll win his money back.
