Manly Man Musical No. 4

'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' (1971)

On paper, "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" doesn't seem very manly. It's based on a kids' book; stars Gene Wilder and a bunch of child actors; and even won an Oscar for best original score.

Surely, those are kisses of death for any movie musical hoping to be manly. But put all that aside, and let's press on.

Charlie wins a chance to tour the eclectic Willie Wonka's candy factory, and fellow attendees drop off one by one as their misbehaviors end in hilarious tragedy. In the end, Charlie's good behavior wins him the factory.

True, there are no roughhouse shenanigans, but it teaches a manly lesson: Raise your kid right and he can win in the end. Obviously the lesson here is about being a responsible father.

But if you feel the need for some roughness -- even killing -- there's another option.
