23ABC Movie Minute: A preview of the August releases hitting theatres this month

The last month for summer movies is jam-packed

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The summer movie season is almost coming to a close. The days of at least one big blockbuster a week are numbered, and movie releases will scale back a bit until November/December. The August lineup is still very impressive though with the last of the summer movies getting their turn in the spotlight.

Here's the schedule for the releases coming up within the next month.


The Smurfs 2 (released on Wednesday July 31st)

  • Genre: Family Comedy
  • Synopsis: Everyone's favorite tiny blue creatures are back for a second adventure. When one of their own is lured to the evil side by the wizard, Gargamel (Hank Azaria), it's up to the Smurfs to save her and save the day.
  • Starring: Neil Patrick Harris, Katy Perry, Hank Azaria
  • Rated PG for some rude humor and action

2 Guns

  • Genre: Action Comedy
  • Synopsis: Two intelligence officers who have no idea that each of them are undercover for different agencies have to work together to infiltrate a drug cartel.
  • Starring: Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg
  • Rated R for violence throughout, language and brief nudity

We're the Millers (released on Wednesday August 7th)

  • Genre: Comedy
  • Synopsis: When a low-level drug dealer needs to smuggle his product over the border, he hires a fake family to travel with him to avoid suspicion. Of course, things don't work out quite as easily as he may have hoped.
  • Starring: Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts
  • Rated R for crude sexual content, pervasive language, drug material and brief graphic nudity

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (released on Wednesday August 7th)

  • Genre: Fantasy
  • Synopsis: Sequel to Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and based on the popular novel series, the son of Poseidon must find the mysterious and mythical Golden Fleece in order to protect the world from evil.
  • Starring: Logan Lerman, Nathan Fillion, Stanley Tucci
  • Rated PG for fantasy action violence, some scary images and mild language

  • Genre: Sci-Fi
  • Synopsis: In a world where the rich live on Elysium where diseases are cured and there is no poverty and crime, and the poor live on a dystopian Earth, one man must fight to save himself and the fate of others on earth by infiltrating the paradise in space. Written and directed by acclaimed District 9 director, Neill Blomkamp.
  • Starring: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley
  • Not rated as of yet, but will most likely get an R rating for violence and language.

  • Genre: Animated, Family
  • Synopsis: The story of a plane who is afraid of heights, but dreams of one day competing in an aerial race. With the help of his friends, he ventures to make his dream come true.
  • Starring: voice talents of Val Kilmer, Dane Cook, Julia Louis-Dreyfus
  • Rated PG for some mild action and rude humor

  • Genre: Drama
  • Synopsis: A biopic on the early life of Apple founder, Steve Jobs.
  • Starring: Ashton Kutcher, Josh Gad
  • Rated PG-13 for some drug content and brief strong language

Kick-Ass 2

  • Genre: Action Comedy
  • Synopsis: A sequel to 2010"s graphic novel interpretation, Kick-Ass, the home made superhero and his new partner Hit-Girl team up with new friends to fight a new threat headed up by a one-time old friend.
  • Starring: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Jim Carrey
  • Rated R for strong violence, pervasive language, crude and sexual content and brief nudity

Lee Daniel's The Butler

  • Genre: Drama
  • Synopsis: The life and experiences of the White House's African-American butler during the greater part of the 20th century.

The World's End

  • Genre: Comedy
  • Synopsis: The third installment in the unofficial Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), The World's End follows five friends attempting to recreate the pub crawl of their youth, but their hometown has been taken over by robots and they must fight them, along with finishing their beers.
  • Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman
  • Rated R for pervasive language including sexual
  • The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (released on Wednesday August 21st)

    • Genre: Fantasy
    • Synopsis: When a young girls mom is taken by a demon, she learns the truth about her past in her quest to rescue her which changes her life forever.
    • Starring: Lily Collins, Jonathan Rhys-Myers, Lena Headey
    • Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of fantasy violence and action, and some suggestive content
