The Tryon Farm Guest House, an 1896 Victorian farmhouse featured on the 2008 Best of the Midwest list by Midwest Living Magazine, is only 10 minutes from the Indiana Dunes and has rooms starting at $73 if you don't mind sharing a bathroom across the hall.
Near Indianapolis, try the Old MG Bed and Breakfast 12 miles west of the city, an 1860s brick home with lots of character, including a 1940s red MG convertible parked outside. In the southern part of the state, try the Big Locust Farm Bed and Breakfast, a brick country Victorian on 93 acres near Paoli, with rooms starting at $65 per night.HotelsHotel chains in Indianapolis are a good bet if you just want a low price -- look for specials, depending on when you travel. Rooms at Canyon Inn just 15 miles east of Bloomington and Indiana University in McCormick's Creek State Park -- the state's oldest -- start at $79. Rooms in the four-story limestone Spring Hill Inn in southern Indiana's Spring Mill State Park start at $64.Romantic GetawaysThe Spring House Inn in Porter in the Indiana Dunes area has English cottage architecture and the cozy warmth of a bed and breakfast with the luxury of boutique hotel, including whirlpool rooms, according to its Web site. Serenity Spring Resort in Michigan City offers a "unique adult escape" with 30 bungalows with sunken whirlpools and fireplaces, arrayed on 85 acres of wilderness around a lake. That Pretty Place, a bed and breakfast in Shipshewana in Amish Country, caters to couples and honeymooners, with a 37-acre grounds with wooded walking trails, a meadow and pond.
