New Products Promise To Erase Wrinkles Forever

Permanent Skin Treatments Waiting For FDA Approval

UPDATED: 11:28 a.m. EST March 12, 2003

In 2002, more than 5 million people had Collagen, Botox injections or other treatments for lines and wrinkles.

When Artecoll is injected into the skin, the Collagen holds tniy plastic beads in place, permanently reducing wrinkles.

Those treatments offer temporary results. But several products waiting for approval from the Food and Drug Administration promise a longer fix.

"I think there's going to be tremendous excitement when these become available," said Dr. Timothy Flynn.

Some of the new products, which contain hyaluronic acids, are called Perlane or Restylane.

Flynn said he has worked with the products in Canada and Europe.

"They've been used for many years and we know they have an excellent safety record," he said.

Like Collagen, Restylane and Perlane are injected under the skin. The results last six to nine months, which is almost twice as long as Collagen.

Another product, called Artecoll, claims it is a permanent solution to wrinkles.

Artecoll is made up of tiny plastic beads wrapped in Collagen. When injected into the skin, the Collagen holds the beads in place and permanently reduces wrinkles.

Flynn said if the FDA approves the new products, it is best to start with temporary treatments, like Collagen.

"Then if you're pleased with the wrinkle reduction and the filling that you've gotten, you can feel very comfortable and secure going with the permanent filling substance," he said.

The FDA is expected to approve the new products in the next few months. Flynn said to expect them to be more expensive than Collagen or Botox.
