New Lice Treatment More Effective, Study Shows

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Each year as many as 12 million children nationwide become infested with head lice.Currently, parents are advised to wash their child's hair with Permethrin shampoo, more commonly known as "Nix," to kill the lice.Unfortunately, this treatment does not kill the nits, or eggs, of the lice and in order to prevent reinfestation, the hair must be carefully combed through and each nit removed one at a time.
In hopes of doing away with this unpleasant task, a new treatment known as NatrOVA was compared to Nix under real world conditions in nearly 400 households.The study conducted by Burke Pharaceuticals found that NatrOVA was twice as effective at getting rid of lice, and because it also killed the nits, it spared parents the trouble of having to remove each nit by hand.FDA approval for NatrOVA is currently pending.
