Antidepressants May Raise Miscarriage Risk
Study Finds SSRIs Could Harm Fetuses

Women who take antidepressants while pregnant are more likely to have a miscarriage than women who don't.The medicines raise the risk 68 percent, according to a study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.A news release on the work said that 3.7 percent of women take depressants while carrying a child. It was based on a study of more than 5,100 women in Quebec who had miscarriages who were compared to a large study of women who did not miscarry.
Among those who miscarried, 5.5 percent had taken antidepressants. The news release did not cite the rate among those not taking the drugs.Combinations of antidepressants and higher dosages increased the risks."These results, which suggest an overall class effect of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, are highly robust given the large number of users studied," senior author Dr. Anick Berard, of the University of Montreal, said.
