LOS ANGELES -- A 9-year-old Virginia boy has arrived in Los Angeles, where he will have a brain tumor he named "Frank" biopsied at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Wednesday.Dr. Hrayr Shahinian, of the Skull Base Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, agreed to perform the biopsy free of charge after hearing that David Dingman-Grover's parents were auctioning off a bumper sticker reading "Frank Must Die" on eBay to raise money for the expensive biopsy procedure.
"We have been so blessed," said David's mother, Tiffini Dingman-Grover, of Sterling, Va.David said he named his tumor after Frankenstein, who used to scare him until he dressed up as the monster for Halloween, reported KNBC-TV in Los Angeles. The boy was diagnosed in May 2003 with a grapefruit-sized malignant tumor called a rhabdomyosarcoma. Because of the tumor's size and its location in the brain -- most are in the limbs -- doctors were not able to remove it, Dingman-Grover said. But several chemotherapy treatments shrank it to the size of a peach pit. Now, David needs a highly specialized biopsy to determine whether the tumor is still cancerous or if it has been reduced to scar tissue, his mother and doctor said.David's biopsy is scheduled for Wednesday. The family still has to help pay for the anesthesiologist and other hospital fees, but the $40,000 in private donations they've received since the case caught the public's attention earlier this month will more than adequately cover them, Dingman-Grover said.Although the eBay auction of the "Frank Must Die" bumper sticker drew a high bid of $10,700 from the online gambling company GoldenPalace.com, the family turned the bid down, saying they had already received enough money to pay for the biopsy."We don't ever want to take more than we need," Dingman-Grover said. The family thanked GoldenPalace.com and said the Web site will still get a "Frank Must Die" bumper sticker. The family also asked that GoldenPalace.com donate their bid money instead to Growing Hope, a Virginia charity for children with cancer.
