A teacher in Rhode Island quit his job over standardized tests in a very public way.

Stephen Round, formerly a second-grade teacher in Providence Public Schools, took to the web to announce his resignation by making a YouTube video that's since gone viral. (Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBSgchJe2Z0)

In it, he reads a letter in which he says he can no longer work for a school district that is so structured, it allows no room for alternative methods of teaching and learning, Providence TV station WPRI reported.

"I would rather leave my secure, $70,000 job, with benefits, and tutor in Connecticut for free than be part of a system that is diametrically opposed to everything I believe education should be," said Round, who first applied to become a teacher in Providence in 1999.

He told WPRI he made the video after the school board refused to let him read his resignation letter aloud.

In response, the Providence school district released the following statement to Providence TV station WLNE:

 "We regret that Mr. Round has found his recent professional experience dissatisfactory, but we thank the hundreds of teachers in our schools who continue to make learning exciting and enjoyable for their students every day."
