Can you lose weight eating the same foods?

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Subway says Jared did it with Subway sandwiches and Kellogg’s suggests you can do it by eating special K cereal.  Variety may be the spice of life, but Keri Glassman, a registered dietitian says the not eating is it.  “It is a way of controlling calories and still be satisfied and have consistency,” she said.

It would be eating the same thing every day to lose weight, call it The boredom diet.  Good Morning America spoke to Mono Luncher who ate the same chipotle salad for eight months.  “I lost 50 pounds and continued to lose weight every week,” said Luncher.

It’s not unlike the cabbage soup diet where repetition leads to weight loss.  One published study looked at 60 women who ate the same meal every day for weeks and ate less.  It’s a small sample to be sure, but the study showed women who ate mac and cheese every day for a week wound up eating 100 fewer calories a day. 

While experts say the Boredom Diet can lull you into weight loss, they say it only works if your choices are balanced.  Mac and Cheese says Glassman is not the nutritious way to go.  If you’re going to have the same thing every day make sure it’s portion controlled.
 

The boredom diet is nothing new. The weight management strategy has been around at least since 2005 when author Michael W. Woodward, released the book titled The Boredom Diet.
