Juicing 101: Easy ways to start the liquid diet trend
Morgan Dickerson's love for juice actually started with yoga.
"I think it's a very subtle change that happens," said Dickerson. "You start to want to eat different things."
She incorporates fresh veggie and fruit juices into her meal plan every day. And she's not the only one. With documentaries like Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, more Americans are downing produce by the pound.
Stores like Whole Foods have offered freshly squeezed fruits and veggies from a juice bar for years, and in the last year, began offering bottled juices that are made in the store on a daily basis.
"We really need extra servings of fruits and vegetables," said Whole Foods Healthy Eating Specialist Sharon Stroud. "This is a really easy way to get those servings into your diet."
If you're a beginner:
- Don't judge a juice by its color. They aren't always pretty (think pond scum).
- Start with sweeter juices like apple and carrot. Greener juices are more nutrient-dense and lowest in calories, but it can take time to work into the flavors of kale and spinach.
- Ease into the process. Your body might learn to crave it.
That's exactly what happened to Morgan Dickerson. "I love it. It's so tasty to me."
She says juicing has improved her skin, nails, hair, cravings for bad food and energy.
"If I start my day off juicing, the rest of my day is the bomb-diggity," laughs Dickerson.
