Health insurance companies in California may become a thing of the past if lawmakers have their way.

A groundbreaking proposal is being considered by California lawmakers that would significantly revamp the state’s health care system. The new legislation would involve eliminating insurance companies, guaranteeing health coverage for everyone.

This idea of single-payer health care continues gaining popularity with Democrats. This is especially true through the current administration’s failed attempts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.

According to the Associated Press, the proposal was endorsed by the California’s powerful nursing union and two Democratic senators. Legislators are pushing the boundaries of public policy in moving forward with the new measure as it would guarantee health coverage with no out-of-pocket costs for all California residents. This would prevent private insurers from providing the same services, essentially taking them out of the picture. A new state agency would be put in its place and contract with health care providers to pay the bills for everyone.
