Dodgers Fight Their Way Back Into Series With Win Over Phillies

POSTED: 10:10 pm PDT October 12, 2008

(Sports Network) - Blake DeWitt's three-run triple highlighted a five-run first inning, and Hiroki Kuroda threw six-plus strong innings as the Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-2, in a fiery Game 3 of the National League Championship Series.

Manny Ramirez and Casey Blake also singled in runs as part of the first-inning outburst, and Rafael Furcal homered in the second off 45-year-old Jamie Moyer.

The Dodgers trail the best-of-seven series, 2-1, but have two more games in Los Angeles before possibly going back to Philadelphia.

The benches cleared in the third inning, soon after Kuroda threw a high pitch over Shane Victorino's head, and Dodgers catcher Russell Martin was hit by a pitch twice.

"I don't really look at it as bad blood," said Dodgers manager Joe Torre. " I really don't think this is anything that's going to be long-lasting."

Kuroda (2-0) was charged with five hits and two runs, and relievers Cory Wade and Jonathan Broxton combined to yield a pair of singles the rest of the way.

Pedro Feliz and Pat Burrell had RBI singles for the Phillies, while Moyer (0-2), the oldest to ever start an LCS game, was blistered for six hits and six runs in 1 1/3 innings.

Game 4 is scheduled for Monday. Derek Lowe, the Game 1 loser, will pitch on three days' rest for LA, while Joe Blanton will take the mound for the Phillies.

"Momentum in this game is huge and they came out in the first inning, and people would say they took that away from us," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. "We've got a lot of baseball left."

In the third, Kuroda threw a high pitch over Victorino's head. Victorino jawed at Kuroda and appeared to say, "It's OK to throw at my body, but not my head."

Victorino then grounded out to first base but had words for Kuroda. Dodgers left fielder Ramirez, who had a pitch go by his head on Friday from Brett Myers, had to be held back by Martin as the dugouts emptied.

"We were mad about what happened in Philly," said Ramirez. "We weren't trying to hit Victorino. He's a great guy. We were just trying to send a message. I was just trying to protect the team."

Umpires had warned both benches and there were no ejections. The players then left the field for the bottom of the third.

"When you start throwing at people's heads there's a good chance somebody's going to get hurt," said Manuel. "That's not what these postseasons are about, that's not what baseball's about. Pitching and pitching inside and moving the ball around are all part of the game, but at the same time you start throwing the ball up around people's head...there's no place in baseball for that."

Kuroda's pitch was apparently also in retaliation for the Phillies throwing at Martin. Moyer hit Martin with a pitch on the left leg in the first inning, and in the second Clay Condrey's offering was up near Martin's head. In the seventh, Chad Durbin hit Martin with a pitch on the side.

"It's two competitive teams going at it," said DeWitt. "Both teams are fighting to get into a World Series. Emotions are about as high as you can get. And it's just what happens in this game sometimes."

Before the tempers flared, the Dodgers bolted to a big lead by pounding Moyer in the first. Furcal, Andre Ethier and Ramirez had three consecutive singles to account for the first run. Then came Martin's plunking, and with one out Blake singled to right field for a 2-0 lead. With two outs, DeWitt took a 2-2 pitch into the right field corner.

"They hit some pretty good pitches," said Moyer. "They took advantage of guys on base and kept it going. The killer was the pitch to DeWitt. It was too good of a pitch for the situation."

Feliz singled in Ryan Howard in the second, but Furcal homered to center on the first pitch in the bottom of the inning.

Nomar Garciaparra plated Martin with a base hit to left in the fourth before the Phillies put together three straight hits in the seventh off Kuroda for their lone big threat of the night. Chase Utley doubled, Howard singled and Burrell's infield hit made it a five-run margin.

Wade then fanned Jayson Werth and retired Feliz on a fly out to center before pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs grounded out.
