Lee Homers As Cubs Top Braves

POSTED: 10:59 pm PDT July 6, 2009

(Sports Network) - Derrek Lee smacked a two-run homer and doubled, while Randy Wells tossed six innings of two-run ball to lead the Chicago Cubs past the Atlanta Braves, 4-2, in the opener of a three-game series at Wrigley Field.

Wells (4-3) gave up seven hits and fanned four batters to collect his fourth consecutive victory. Wells became the first Chicago rookie to win four straight starts since Kerry Wood accomplished the feat from April 30-May 17, 1998. Kevin Gregg picked up his 15th save of the year.

Kosuke Fukudome went 2-for-3 with an RBI double for the Cubs, who have won two in a row and six of eight overall. Ryan Theriot had the other run batted in. Third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list prior to Monday's game, went 0-for-4 at the plate.

"I felt pretty good. I didn't get any hits but it feels great to get back out there," Ramirez said.

Jair Jurrjens (6-7) allowed four runs on seven hits with three walks and one strikeout in a six-inning start to take the loss for Atlanta. Jurrjens dropped to 3-3 in nine road starts this season.

"He pitched great. The fact that he settled down and gave us a chance to win just shows you the kind of year he is having," Braves outfielder Matt Diaz said about Jurrjens.

Nate McLouth went 3-for-5 with a solo shot for the Braves, who have dropped three straight after a five-game winning streak. Yunel Escobar went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Cubs used a two-run homer from Lee in the first inning to take the early edge. Fukudome started the frame with a single and crossed the plate two batters later when Lee drove a Jurrjens offering over the wall in left.

"I was just trying to see a pitch in the zone and react," Lee said about the homer.

Chicago plated two more runs during its next at-bat to build a four-run cushion. Following two quick outs, Mike Fontenot and Wells hit back-to-back singles. Fukudome then stroked an RBI double to right, while Theriot followed with an RBI infield single.

Jurrjens ran into more trouble in the third, loading the bases with one out. But Fontenot grounded into a fielder's choice and Wells grounded out to prevent further runs from crossing the plate.

Atlanta scored a run in the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-1. Chipper Jones and Brian McCann hit consecutive singles and Garret Anderson grounded into a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners. Escobar then stroked an RBI single to center.

McLouth's solo homer to right in the fifth trimmed the gap to two.

Sean Marshall, Carlos Marmol, and Gregg tossed a scoreless seventh, eighth, and ninth, respectively, to secure the victory for Chicago.
