(Sports Network) - American League powers collide in Anaheim this afternoon, as the New York Yankees and the hometown Angels play the second of three weekend games.

On Friday, Erick Aybar and Kendry Morales each hit a three-run home run as the Angels took a 10-6 win over the Yankees in the opener of a three-game set.

Chone Figgins went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI while Bobby Abreu had two hits, two RBI and a run scored for the Angels, who have won four of their last six games.

Joe Saunders started on the mound but lasted just five innings as he was charged with five runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Jason Bulger (4-1) got the win for throwing a scoreless sixth inning.

The Angels have dominated the Yankees in Anaheim of late, as the team has taken 15 of the last 20 games against the Bronx Bombers in the City of Angels. The Yankees' last series win in Anaheim came between May 18-20, 2004.

"We need to get a handle on our starting pitching," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "They swung the bats well. We swung them better."

Alex Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with solo home run, two RBI and two runs scored while Derek Jeter had four hits and a run scored for the Yankees, who came into Friday having won 13 of their last 15 games.

Joba Chamberlain was tagged for five runs -- four earned -- on nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts in just 4 1/3 innings of work. Mark Melancon (0-1) suffered the first loss of his career as he was charged with three runs -- two earned -- on three hits in 2 1/3 innings.

"For a starting pitcher it's repeating your mechanics and right now Joba is struggling to do that," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "We need him to be successful. It was a frustrating day for all of us."

Jered Weaver will look to continue his dominating play when he takes the hill this afternoon for the Angels.

Weaver, who is 6-1 in his last eight starts, has been one of the top pitchers in baseball and is coming off another strong performance in a victory over Texas.

In the 9-4 decision over the Rangers, the hard-throwing right-hander tossed seven strong innings, allowing just four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits. Weaver only walked one in the victory and struck out nine.

The California native has been outstanding in his home park, posting a 6-1 mark in nine starts, and that ledger comes with an equally impressive 2.05 earned run average.

Weaver has made five career starts against the Bronx Bombers, and although his record stands at 3-1 in those outings, he possesses an abysmal 6.11 earned run average.

As for the Yankees they will send Andy Pettitte to the hill, as the veteran southpaw will try to rebound from a tough outing against Toronto. In Pettitte's last matchup the crafty lefty was pounded by the Blue Jays, surrendering six runs on five hits and five walks in six innings of work.

The poor performance elevated Pettitte's earned run average to 4.53, while dropping his record to 8-4 on the year.

The 37-year-old has pitched surprisingly well away from the Bronx this season, collecting a 4-1 ledger in seven starts, while also posting a 2.79 earned run average.
