Grand Marquis: Rockies Hurler Goes For MLB-High 12th Win Vs. Braves

(Sports Network) - More than a few teams are likely to contact the Rockies about Jason Marquis before the season's trade deadline. However, the way Marquis has pitched this year, he likely won't be available.

Marquis goes for his major league-leading 12th win tonight while also looking to extend his 17-inning scoreless streak in Colorado's continuation of a four- game series with the Atlanta Braves at Coors Field.

The 30-year-old Marquis was roughed up for eight runs (7 earned) in just 3 1/3 innings of work versus the Angels on June 24, but hasn't allowed a run since. He notched his third career shutout on June 30 versus the Dodgers, a two-hit blanking, before tossing another eight scoreless innings in beating Washington on Monday.

Marquis improved to 11-5 with a 3.61 earned run average this year and has also been able to handle Coors Field's hitter-friendly atmosphere. In eight home starts this season, the first-year Rockie and sinkerball specialist is 5-2 with a 3.72 ERA.

"I think this [season] is on a more consistent level," Marquis said on Colorado's Web site. "I've had probably a little more sink at times -- maybe a little more velocity -- but on a consistent level, day-to-day, game-to-game, this is the best."

The All-Star right-hander has struggled versus the Braves in his career even though he beat them on May 18 with eight innings of one-run ball. He improved to just 2-3 with an 8.70 ERA in six starts against Atlanta, which he began his career with in 2000.

The Braves send to the hill Jair Jurrjens, who is just 6-7 on the season despite a 2.91 ERA. He has lost five of his last six decisions, though Atlanta has plated more than two runs in just two of his last seven starts. The 23- year-old gave up four runs on seven hits over six innings of a 4-2 loss to the Cubs on Monday.

Jurrjens bested the Rockies on May 19, allowing a run over seven innings with eight strikeouts, and the righty is 3-1 with a 2.93 ERA in his career versus Colorado.

The two clubs have split the first two games of this series, with Atlanta notching a 4-1 victory on Friday to snap Colorado's winning streak at four games. Garret Anderson and Diory Hernandez each knocked in a pair of runs for the Braves.

Derek Lowe scattered four hits and a run over his six-inning start for the Braves, winners in three of four overall and seven of their last 10 versus Colorado.

"My best game of the year," said Lowe. "Coming off my last five starts (overall) and my last four games here, I was awful. So there wasn't a lot of confidence to draw on."

Atlanta is expected to start outfielder Ryan Church tonight one day after acquiring him from the Mets in exchange for Jeff Francoeur. Often thought to be in the doghouse in New York, Church is hitting .280 with two homers and 22 RBI in 67 games this year.

"I'm just looking at it as a new start," Church said on Atlanta's site. "They've got a great organization in Atlanta."

Todd Helton's homer was the lone offense for the Rockies on Friday, while Ubaldo Jimenez allowed just six hits and two runs with eight strikeouts over six full frames.

Colorado lost reliever Alan Embree for the season after he was hit in the right left by a line drive in the seventh inning on Friday. Embree suffered a fractured right tibia and is scheduled to have surgery today.
