Reyes Homers, Wagner Closes As Mets Tie Phils For NL East Lead

POSTED: 8:20 pm PDT July 23, 2008

(Sports Network) - Jose Reyes hit the go-ahead three-run home run in the sixth inning and John Maine was solid on the hill, as the New York Mets edged the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-3, as the clubs moved into a tie atop the NL East.

Maine (9-7) got the win as he went seven frames and yielded just three runs on six hits while fanning five and walking two batters.

Damion Easley went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Mets, who are just 2-3 over their last five games. Carlos Beltran and Marlon Anderson chipped in an RBI each in the win.

Brett Myers, who made his first start since being designated for assignment in late June to work on his mechanics, stamina and overall mental psyche, lasted five innings and was touched for three runs on three hits while striking out two and walking a career-high five batters in a no-decision.

Shane Victorino and Geoff Jenkins hit solo home runs for the Phillies, who have dropped three of four overall. Jimmy Rollins had the other RBI for Philadelphia, which extended his hit streak to 10 games.

Ryan Madson (2-1) took over for Myers in the sixth and gave up back-to-back singles to Easley and Brian Schneider before Maine struck out on a foul bunt. Reyes then deposited a first-pitch changeup over the fence in right-center, as the Metropolitans assumed a 6-3 lead they would not relinquish.

"We came to play today, hopefully we can win tomorrow and take the series," Reyes said. "Now we have to play consistent baseball."

Billy Wagner, who was not available to close when the Mets blew a three-run lead in the series opener on Tuesday, set down the Phillies in order in the ninth for his 25th save.

The Mets wasted no time in getting to Myers. Reyes led off with a ground out, but Endy Chavez, David Wright and Carlos Delgado all worked walks to load the bases. After a brief coaching visit to the mound, Beltran earned an RBI via a six-pitch walk. Anderson kept it going with an RBI ground out as NY assumed a 2-0 lead.

"My four-seamer was coming out well, but it was up," Myers said. "I feel if the first inning didn't go that way, we could've won and I could've lasted nine innings."

In the second, Victorino belted a two-out fastball just over the fence in right-center and Jenkins followed suit with a blast to right, as the Phillies knotted the contest at two.

Myers got into trouble again in the third. Wright worked a one-out walk, Delgado was hit by a pitch and Beltran singled to load the bases. After Anderson went down swinging, Easley hit a grounder to the left side of the infield, which Rollins couldn't make a play on, allowing Wright to score and the Mets were up 3-2.

The Phils tied it back up in the fifth. Carlos Ruiz led off with a single, moved to second on Myers' sac bunt and came around as Rollins laced a double to right.
